Hair By Brittany

Ali's hair is a very special case because her hair is curlier than a corkscrew! Ali explained to me that she has never worn her hair blow dried straight. That all changed last Tuesday when she came to visit me at Cristophe Salon...

Using Kerastase Oleo Relax rinse-out treatment, her hair was still very curly, but this helped tame the curl more than usual. After the treatment was rinsed out, I cut her hair to give her curly hair a more flattering shape. I cut slowly and watched carefully to see how the curl was starting to form as it dried. We rinsed her hair again, to start from wet. I gave her a blow out using a round brush to smooth. No iron was used. Thanks Ali!

At Home Hair Styling Tools: Tips & Warnings

Styling your hair at home is a great way to show off your beautiful cut and color. Although, there are a few things that you will need to know in order to keep your hair from drying out or even breaking! I recommend using a styling product with heat protectant! I like Kerastase Nectar Thermique.

These are three tools that you would typically have at home and here are some tips on how to use them:

1. Blow Dryer

Rough drying is a fast and easy way to get the moisture out of your hair. After your hair is completely dry, you can move on to styling with an iron. Using the blow dryer, without the nozzle, flip your head upside-down and dry throughly. If you want to style with a round brush, get 90% of the moisture out, then use a round brush to dry and smooth the rest. *If you have frizzy/coarse hair, do not rough dry! Start with a round brush on damp hair to pull the frizz out before it sets!*

Every blow dryer usually comes with a nozzle and a vent screen. The nozzle is used to direct the air in a stream. While using a round brush, point the nozzle down your hair shaft to smooth the hair. The vent screen is located on the opposite side of where the nozzle is. It needs to be cleaned out often. If you feel that your blow dryer is over heating or is hotter than usual, take the vent screen off and run it under water to get rid of the lint that collects over time. This is very crucial! If you're blow dryer is too hot, your hair will break!

2. Curling Iron

A curling iron is the best way to add wave and body to your locks! To achieve this look, check out my previous post, Do it Yourself.
It's important to get an iron with adjustable heat. Stock settings on a curling iron may be too hot for your hair. If your hair is fine or over-processed, use a lower setting, your hair doesn't need much heat to get a curl. If your hair is more of a medium to coarse texture, use a medium to high heat setting. The highest setting is not usually necessary. Beware! The most fragile part of your hair is the hair line. Leaving the hair in the iron too long, could cause your hair to break off! 5-7 seconds is all you need. Try it out, starting from a low setting, see what temperature best suits you and your hair!

3. Flat Iron

You can use the same advice for the flat iron as you did for the curling iron. The flat iron can sometimes dry out and break the hair more than a curling iron. Reason being, typically, people go over the hair with a flat iron too many times. A good tip is to use a comb to hold and smooth the section of hair. For a smooth press, have the comb brushing out the section of hair as you smooth with the iron. Slowly, go over the section of hair 1-2 times. Be careful around the hairline!!! Use a lower setting when straightening those pieces, they are ultra delicate!

Top 10 Ways to Look Fabulous!

Curious on how to add style to your look without over doing it? Want some extra sex appeal? Check out these small simple details that will have you walking with confidence and turn some heads!

1. Hair is on the top on my list! Whether your hair is in a messy bun, braided, has a natural wave, or out of the shower straight, make sure that you maintenance your hair often to keep it shiny and healthy! To do that, here are a few tips on how to take care of your hair:

a. Brush your scalp and hair with a paddle brush nightly. For curly/frizzy hair: out of the shower when it's wet is the best time. Read Tangled for more details!

b. Eating healthy and taking a daily multi-vitamin. Salmon, almonds, flaxseed and avocado are all healthy for your hair, body and mind! Biotin is a special vitamin for hair and nail growth.

c. Using the correct shampoo and conditioner specifically for your hair type. If you need professionals advice, ask me anytime! Heiressofhair@gmail.com

d. A fresh haircut, even a trim, will relieve each individual strand from the drama of split ends and chemical processing, leaving your hair more shiny and full of life!

2. Nail Polish- Polished nails always add style and freshness to your look. Diana and Titania at Cristophe Salon, Beverly Hills offer 'The Bomb' manicure & pedicures. Occasionally, when I go to a random place to have my nails done, the polish job is usually not so great and it doesn't last. Typically, after one week, my cuticles looks worse than ever! The girls at Cristophe take the extra time to really make sure that your nails are cleaned up well so that polish can last all week! I've never had a better one!

3. Lip Gloss or just a shiny moisturizing lip balm is just as important as mascara. No one likes cracked, dry lips. Smooth those babies out with something shiny and maybe even sparkly.

4. Mascara always brightens up the eyes. There are all different great mascaras out there, L'oréal's brand of mascaras you can get at any drugstore have lots of great choices. You just have to find the one that suits you the best! I love playing around with colored mascaras! My favorite is YSL Blue Mascara, its a sweet little surprise when someone is up close, and checking you out!

5. Add something Designer or Vintage. Some of us can't break the bank with designer accessories, but vintage is just as great! A handbag or some really cute shoes are always a great way to add style!

6. That brings me to shoes. Heels or Stylish Flats make a huge difference in what you are wearing. If you want to dress your look up, along with your figure, wear high heels.

a. Heels scream sex appeal and contorts your stance for a more playful, feminine shape. Not to mentions a cute tush! Don't fool yourself, make sure they are easy and comfortable to walk in!

b. Flats are great too! Casual, comfortable, and for some outfits it doesn't look like you are trying too hard. If you are trying to keep it stylish look, stay away from flip flops unless you are going to the beach!

7. Tailored Eyebrows is key to shaping your face and eyes for a more manicured and sexy look! Jermaine, Thierry, and Thomas at Cristophe Salon, Beverly Hills are great for maintaining your shapely brows, not to mention they have a whole make-up department! Check them out!

8. Jewelry- I love jewelry, but it's important to not over do it. Accent pieces are the best way to go:

a. A chunky ring with a dainty bracelet

b. A statement necklace or broach with stud earrings

c. Dangly earrings are enough in themselves.

9. Sunglasses are stylish, they protect your eyes from the sun or hide sleepless hours from the night before, but please, PLEASE, only wear them outdoors and in the daytime.

10. Define your own personal style. Try to make it your own, you don't want to copy cat too much. It might take a while to search for the things that best suit you, so look around in all different types of shops. Be careful not to over accessorize or be to matchy, matchy. Let your creativity come through to develop you own person style!

Do-it Yourself

It's simple to get a stylish look at home with a curling iron. This look in particular will take you fifteen minutes once you get it down.

1. Heat up your curling iron. The bigger the iron, the looser your curl will be.

2. Have a big clip handy to section your hair out of the way while you curl.

3. Start in the back by clipping half of your hair up on top of your head.

4. Take a section about 2-inches apart.

5. Wrap hair around the iron- if you wrap just the ends, the curl will be softer. If you wrap up the whole section your hair will be very curly. You can wrap in either direction, if you are curling in synchronized sections it will look more organized.

6. Take it section by section- it doesn't have to be perfect, it's better messy.

7. For a more modern look, when you get to the front, curl the front layers so the curl moves away from your face.

8. After you are done, spray it with a light hair spray- I recommend Cristophe's Shaping Spray

9. Brush your hair. I prefer a boar bristle brush, the bristles are all very close together which smoothes the hair and creates a shiny wave.

10. Spray a little more hairspray for extra hold and... Voilà! A quick and easy way to have chic hair before you run out the door! Don't be afraid, just try it!
